April 30, 2010: Bankers Teach Savings Lessons
Employees of Farmers & Merchants Bank gave a savings lesson to local elementary school students on April 27 & 28 as part of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save Program.Farmers & Merchants Bank employees joined thousands of bankers across the country who trade in their balance sheets for blackboards to help fill the need for financial education. Thirty-seven bank employees visited 56 different classes at ten area elementary schools, and talked with over 1500 children.
“Studies show that kids aren’t learning the skills they need to make smart financial decisions as adults,” said Dean Withers, bank President & CEO. “Communities and schools teach other life skills, such as driving a car, but we don’t spend enough time teaching financial skills. Bankers are in the schools today to help fill that gap and prepare future customers for financial success.”
Bankers will visited the following local schools:
Ashby Lee Elementary, Shenandoah County
WW Robinsons Elementary, Woodstock
Plains Elementary, Timberville
John C. Myers Elementary, Broadway
Shenandoah Valley Adventist, New Market
Lacey Springs Elementary, Rockingham County
John Wayland Elementary, Bridgewater
McGaheysville Elementary
Stanley Elementary, Stanley
Luray Elementary, Luray
The lessons included storybooks and activities tailored for each grade level. Students also received some keepsake goodies from the bankers, including a pencil and a bookmark which looks like a $100 bill and has "Ten Tips For Saving" printed on the back.
Our bankers regularly visit high school and elementary classrooms at teachers' requests to teach a variety of financial skills.
